Orchestra 2001 in Russia : how a passion for new music brought Philadelphia's virtuoso ensemble and two of its foremost composers to Russia, captivating audiences in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Including intimate conversations with Pulizer Prize winning composer George Crumb and eminent Russian emigré David Finko.
Behind-the-scenes events, insights into the composers' views, public performances, glimpses of everyday Russian life, and enthusiastic audience reception are fused into a compelling story revealing the profound beauty of some of the great music of our time.
Orchestra 2001 and its artistic director, James Freeman, have championed and recorded the music of many American composers. Two of them accompanied the ensemble on its Russian tour and are featured here in moving and insightful dialogue guaranteed to increase the viewer's understanding and appreciation of the works performed and of new music in general.
The featured works are Ancient Voices of Children by George Crumb and David Finko's Fromm Septet and Piano Sonata No. 1. Mr. Crumb's special significance to Russian audiences and Mr. Finko's return to his native Russia are especially poignant aspects of the story.
